Barnhill Selected by New York Rangers in NHL Draft

The Jr. Coyotes are thrilled to announce that former standout defenseman Sean Barnhill has been selected by the New York Rangers in the third round (70th overall) of the 2025 NHL Entry Draft. This marks a major milestone in Barnhill’s hockey journey and a proud moment for the entire Jr. Coyotes family.

At 6’5” and 210 pounds, Barnhill is known for his commanding presence on the blue line, strong defensive instincts, and physical style of play. He spent the 2024–25 season with the Dubuque Fighting Saints in the USHL, where he established himself as one of the league’s premier shutdown defensemen. Following the draft, Barnhill was invited to participate in the Rangers’ development camp in New York, giving him an early look at life as a professional and a first-hand opportunity to connect with the team’s staff and prospects.

This fall, Barnhill will take the next step in his development as he suits up for Michigan State University (NCAA). Competing in the Big Ten, one of college hockey’s most competitive conferences, he will face elite-level competition while continuing to refine his skills under the guidance of the Spartans’ coaching staff.

Barnhill’s journey is a testament to years of hard work and dedication. He played all of his Tier 1 youth hockey with the Jr. Coyotes, developing through every age level of the program before making the jump to junior hockey following his 16U season. Known for his leadership and steady play, Sean was a cornerstone of the Jr. Coyotes blue line throughout his time with the club.

With his selection, Barnhill becomes the latest Jr. Coyotes alumnus to hear his name called on draft day, joining recent NHL draftees and current league players Josh Doan (Buffalo Sabres), Matthew Knies (Toronto Maple Leafs), and Mark Kastelic (Boston Bruins). His success further reinforces the Jr. Coyotes’ reputation for producing top-tier talent and preparing players for the next level of the game.

The entire Jr. Coyotes organization extends a heartfelt congratulations to Sean and the Barnhill family on this remarkable achievement. Sean continues to return to the Ice Den Scottsdale during the offseason, where he trains and gives back to the program that helped launch his career.

We look forward to watching his continued rise through the NCAA ranks and beyond as he represents both the Michigan State Spartans and the New York Rangers in the years to come.
